Searching for your next job can seem like an arduous task, especially if you’ve been settled in your current workplace for a long time. Job hunting can become a full-time job in its own right and with so many places advertising jobs in London where do you start? The team at CV-Library has put together a simple guide to help you start your London job hunt. Offering you advice on where you can find jobs advertised, how to find the right jobs for you and how to quickly update your CV.

Traditionally, jobs are advertised in local newspapers, in industry related magazines and on career websites. This is still the case but it can take a life time to search through each platform on a regular basis. Online job boards are basically websites advertising vacancies from loads of different companies and recruitment agencies. They are a fantastic place to start your search for London jobs as you can find thousands of jobs in one place from all sectors and at all levels. CV-Library is a generalist job site which means you can find jobs from all sectors from across on the UK. There are also niche job sites available which concentrate ...
... on one sector or one location, such as JobsRetail.co.uk or EngineeringJobs.co.uk.

When you have chosen an online job board to start your search for London jobs
simply enter your search information, including location, sector, keywords and salary expectations and hit Find Jobs. You will immediately be shown a list of related jobs in order of relevance. If you find your search results are displaying too many jobs then you can narrow them down by adding more search terms; select more keywords and a more specific location. If there aren’t enough jobs displayed then simply make your job search broader, opt for a wider salary bracket or chose a sector rather than keywords. An important thing to remember when looking for jobs in London is the travel requirements. If you are planning to commute your place of work needs to be near good public transport links and if you live in London already calculate how long it takes you to get across the city. A 15 mile journey may not seem like a long distance but in central London this can take a lot longer than normal.

It’s always a good idea to check your CV once every year or so even if you are happy and secure in your current place of work. In today’s climate redundancies are not uncommon and unfortunately careers are sometimes forced to change at the drop of a hat. Keeping your CV up to date will mean you are quickly prepared and one step ahead of the competition. Each year simply add your new skills, projects, campaigns you’ve been working on and update your contact details if they change. You can find more advice on writing CVs in CV-Library’s career centre.
