Nagarhole National Park
En route from Mysore to Coorg, you pass through Nagarhole National Park. This game sanctuary covering hundreds of acres is one of the National animal preserves of India. Elephants, bison, peacocks, monkeys, deer are common sights. Tigers and wild boar are more difficult to spot. This game preserve is controlled by the Forest Department and they do not allow traffic to go through the park at night so as not to disturb the animals. The Forest Department offers guided jeep safaris into the forest area so that tourists are able to see the animals in their natural habitat.

Coorg, which is in the Western Ghats, is fighting for independent statehood. This hilly place is covered with coffee and spice plantations as the weather is ideally suited. The people in the area were traditionally warriors. The winding and steep roads are popular for car rallies. The people of the area are very hospitable and enjoy a party. Pork is the favorite meat and they enjoy it with alcohol. The local people of the area are promoting tourism by opening home stays. They welcome tourists into their home and feed them the local food and wine and regale them with stories of their ancestors.
