Kolkata is a throbbing city in eastern part of India which has a pro colonial history of its origin. It is also the highly regarded cultural capital of our great nation. Art and culture happens to the source of sustenance for this city. There is hardly any form of art that is not practiced here. As such, art in all its form of existence is actually worshipped here in the cultural capital of India. A diverse range of human activities are encapsulated together in the modern concept of art. A great many artists in Kolkata has evolved in different ages. Their glorious work has brought laurels to the city and its people from all parts of the world. Abanindranath Tagore is considered as one of the pioneers in this field. His works earned international repute and appreciation back in the colonial era. The Tagores actually have redefined the destiny of this great city. Another prominent icon among the artists of Kolkata happens to be his sibling Gaganendranath Tagore. Asia’s first ever Noble literature Laureate happens to be none other than Rabindranath Tagore. He was a direct nephew of the two masters mentioned above and was a world renowned painter himself.



India is the land where tradition has been flowing in perennial steams since eternity. As a true disciple of these masters, Nandalal Bose acquired global repute at a later stage. Jamini Roy established a trend in the Bengal School of painting. Ramkinkar Baij, Benode Behari Mukherjee etc. have also worked and lived in Kolkata and has contributed immensely towards structuring and streamlining of modern Indian School of painting.
