Paper Conservation In Schools Learn Ways To Conserve Paper

From tests and assignments in high schools to crafts and art projects in elementary schools, paper is essential to the education process. Using this much paper on a regular basis creates a massive amount of waste paper that needs to be disposed of. Rather than filling garbage cans – and therefore landfills – with extra waste, why not learn ways to use paper more responsibly as well as reduce use and waste? Not only will this make less of a negative impact on the environment, but it’s a great learning tool for students.
Insist on using recycled paper
Schools are stocked with multipurpose and copy paper for a variety of uses. Swap out regular paper for recycled paper and immediately reduce your school’s carbon footprint. Recycled paper gives you the same output that non-recycled paper does in printers, copiers and fax machines, so you won’t even notice a difference nor sacrifice quality.
Get the most out of notebooks & scrap paper
Kids often get carried away and use too much paper out of their notebooks. Encourage them to conserve paper whether it’s by writing in pencil so mistakes can ...
... be erased and rewritten on the same page, or by using one notebook for multiple subjects rather than having a separate notebook for each one. Additionally, suggest they purchase recycled paper notebooks rather than the virgin paper variety.
It would also be beneficial for classrooms to have a scrap paper bin. This bin should be placed in a common area of a classroom and be used for students to place excess paper which they do not wish to use any more, but could be reused again by another student who needs a scrap piece of paper to work out a math problem or practice writing cursive. This helps encourage students to not automatically think a piece of used paper is meant for the garbage can.
Encourage students to get involved
Generate interest in paper conservation and recycling at school. One great way is to start an environmental club that lets students get involved in earth-friendly initiatives not just within the building, but in the community as well. Incentivize the club by giving students extra credit for their efforts or incorporate educational lessons such as calculating how much paper is thrown away every day or how many trees are saved by opting for recycled paper. The club can also act as the catalyst to start a paper recycling program in the school if one isn’t already in place. Student volunteers can collect and sort the paper while teachers arrange for its transport to a recycling facility.
These are just a few ways to start conserving paper at school. Just employing one of these ideas will save a surprising amount of paper. Plus, they’re all great tools to get students interested and educated about conservation and environmental issues.
