Over the years I've noticed a trend. I call it 'following the gift herd'. It's certainly easy to do. Every year there's a new gadget or toy being hyped by the press. Cabbage Patch Kids in the 80s, Tickle Me Elmo in the 90s, Nintendo in the 2000s. Today it's anything that apple makes, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV. All of these products were and are great. But none would qualify as unique gifts.
Unique gifts and unusual gifts need to transcend the normal gift-giving mentality. You need to turn off the noise of the press and the hype around town and you need to mentally focus.
Giving unique gifts takes three skill sets.
1) Ignore the commercialism
2) Know your audience
3) Give it the old sniff test
Commercialism ...
... is everywhere. Each day we're bombarded with ads by major companies pushing their latest products. It's why so many of us have the same things... same cars, same toys, similar furniture, similar appliance. We tend to listen to this marketing. In order to buy unique gifts you must ignore all of this. If you see an ad for it, if it's sold in a mall or if your friend has mentioned it to you it will never ever be an unusual gift. Walk away.
Knowing your audience is paramount. In many ways you need to go against what he or she would normally purchase. That's right... you need to buy them something they would NEVER buy for themselves. So if they like bright colors you need to think dark thoughts. If they love to travel, don't look in stores that sell travel products. If you want to give them a unique gift that will knock their socks off you must turn the entire process upside down.
Deep down it's easy to tell what will be considered a unique gift. unique gifts can pass a three question sniff test.
a) Does anyone you know own it? If yes, they better be the coolest person you know or don't buy it as a gift.
b) Is it sold in any brick and mortar store? If yes, it just isn't a unique gift.
c) Have you ever heard of it before? If yes, don't buy it for them.
The Internet has become the world's retail store and it is perfect for finding unusual gifts. With a few creative keystrokes you'll find what you're looking for and you'll be the gift-giving hero you always wanted to be.
