Are Evergreen Articles Still Relevant?

The SEO world is still abuzz with the Google tandem of Panda and Penguin. In almost every SEO-related news and blogs, people are still talking about how to adapt, how to circumvent being penalized, how to come up with link building ideas and still be able to make rank.
The catchword for the sweeping update Google has done is relevance. In order for you to rank better, you must incorporate content that is timely. In other words, between evergreen and topical content, topical has come out the winner. What was once looked down upon as disposable content, for they only matter for a certain period of time, is what’s being favored now.
Evergreen
Google is now frowning upon evergreen articles. In not so many words, they’re saying if you want to go up the rank, you can’t bank on your evergreen articles anymore to keep the traffic to your website going.

Usually evergreen avoid putting dates or seasons in the articles to avoid being outdated. When these are incorporated then it becomes topical.
Topical
When Google came out with their guideline about fresh content, what they basically mean are topical articles. These are articles that have time expiration like say the breaking news or a review on the newest summer blockbuster movie. They may still be readable in a few years’ time but their relevance has decreased as soon as the event is over.
Technology is also considered a category for topical articles. With new gadgets and improvements on the gadgets coming out religiously every year, what was once the hottest tablet may be replaced by a hotter and improved version of that tablet. Like say Siri, in a few years she will be obsolete and may be replaced by someone else named Bergado, making technology time-oriented.
Quality Content Writing
But, basically, whether your article is evergreen or topical, what’s more important is the quality. Time and time again, SEO gurus have always fostered the importance of quality. Time was, back in the old internet world, content was just background noise, some design in the woodwork that old internet experts thought nobody really cared about. But as SEO evolved into an actual entity, it was discovered that content writing does matter. People do go to it for both learning and pleasure.
It was then that the superiority of the writing was given full attention. It was then that it was the writing that drew traffic to a site. Quality, then and now, has been a Google gauge for ranking.
So whether you write about the newest Siri before everyone else but all your facts are wrong and the whole thing is a mess, you still go down the ranking ladder. And whether you write about tips on waxing your car in the Phoenix weather, but it’s just a perfect gem of a read, top of the ladder you go.
