Purchasing cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages is only half of the battle. Next you need to be proactive in reserving desired airplane seats.

The following are suggestions on how to find better seats:

• The surest way of securing a better seat is to pay for it. That does not have to mean incurring the cost of a First Class ticket. Most U.S. airlines let passengers pay a relatively modest amount to be given a better (i.e. more leg room and often early boarding privileges) coach seat assignment.

• By earning (usually starts at 25,000 miles in a calendar year) elite frequent flier status passengers are given access to more desirable seat assignments. The higher the elite status attained usually the better the perks.

• If initially you are assigned an undesirable seat, such as a middle seat, start checking back with your airline five days prior to departure. More desirable coach seats may open up as elite frequent fliers sometimes receive free upgrades.
