Low self-esteem counselling depends on the ability of the counselor to help an individual understand that human potential is vast. There is no human being who lacks any kind of talent and every human being is capable of doing good to self and society in a variety of ways. In fact, many relationship difficulties stem from one partner (or parent or child) suffering from low self-esteem. It is true that a person faces attacks on one's sense of value or lovability on a daily basis from a variety of quarters.
The way society functions from the time a child comes into the world; s/he is expected to be different without being a non-conformist. This ambiguity of values leads people to expect that everybody can do everything. That is not true since different people are born with different skill sets and are brought in diverse cultural and religious setting. As Einstein said, if you judged a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it would seem very stupid. So, a child who can draw splendidly is scolded and punished for not being as skilful in the languages or if s/he lacks ...
... mathematical skill. It is this kind of set up which instills a sense of worthlessness in children and adolescents leading them to have a low self-esteem.
Not everybody is going to be able to play like Roger Federer nor is everyone going to have the mathematical and scientific skills like Einstein. There are two things which have to be kept in mind during low self-esteem counselling. Firstly, a serious evaluation has to be made of what that individual's potential and latent talents are. Next step would be encouraging that person to develop that potential; if necessary suggesting where proper training for it is likely to be available.
Stress, anxiety, depression, volatility of reactions to situations, financial difficulties, plain misunderstanding – all can contribute to relationship difficulties . When a person is under constant pressure, relationships tend to take a backseat along with health. There can be positive resolutions to these if a person gives that relationship priority and uses compassion instead of playing a blame game.
