The Journey From Green Coffee Beans To Your Cup

Every morning, billions of people around the world start their day way with a beverage. Some do with a glass of milk, while others prefer the stimulating aroma and strong taste of tea or coffee. The latter two are the most popular beverages in the world, with similar properties energizing properties and characteristic aromas. However, unlike tea, coffee also has a large number of enthusiasts with a taste for different, exquisite coffees with a variety of flavour and taste-related properties.
The process of coffee production is very complicated and involves a number of different steps. Each step plays an important role in giving coffee its flavour, which can be modified to a person's own liking. This may come as a surprise, since most mass-produced and marketed coffee brands taste uniform and similar to each other. However, professional breweries and coffee houses avoid the easy way out and choose to emphasize on richness and variety in flavour. The different phases of coffee production are growing / cultivation, roasting, grinding and brewing.
Coffee has two distinct species, namely Coffea arabica and Coffea ...
... robusta. The coffee plant consists of berries that are picked when ripe enough. However, the berries are discarded for the green coffee beans, which go through several processes, eventually leading to ground and consumable coffee. Following harvesting, the beans fermented, washed and then dried. They then undergo the most important process, that is, roasting. Roasting plays an important part in deciding coffee's flavour, taste and other properties. Light roasted coffees, defined by their light colour and absence of cracks are highly acidic in nature and contain less oils. Such roasts are preferred by lovers of strong coffee. As the beans are further roasted, they start developing cracks, become darker and oil starts appearing on its surface. Darker roasts have a sugary, less acidic flavour and also contains lesser amount of caffeine, unless the beans were decaffeinated before roasting.
Roasting the coffee beans is followed by grinding, which may be done in several different ways. The most common method is using a burr grinder, which allows the adjustment of grain size and gives an even grind. Coarseness of the grind depends on the intended brewing method. Brewing is the next most important step in preparation of coffee. Although it is done in several ways, the most common method is simply mixing ground coffee with hot or boiling water in order to extract its flavours, while avoiding over-extraction. Coffee is also commonly brewed using a French press, coffee percolators or an espresso machine. Each brewing method results in different levels of extraction.
