Just as there are different kinds of stress, experts take different approaches to helping you to handle it. Stress counselling becomes vital when stress gets so acute that you are unable to accomplish daily activities or the challenges of even normal work life adequately. The impact on health of stress can take the form of sleeplessness or insomnia; recurring diarrhea; rashes; high blood pressure; severe tension headaches; diabetes, and extreme exhaustion which just never seems to go away. Stress can make a person suffer from psychosomatic illnesses and all kinds of aches and pains which don't seem to have a root cause. Mental health can also be affected and result in mood swings, depression, anxiety and lack of focus and concentration.
This is why many people require anxiety counselling when they are being treated for stress. Anxiety seems to go hand in hand with stress. Yet, it is important that a measure of stress is not only inevitable but even necessary to raise the bar for achievements. It is stress which gets the adrenaline flowing in our bloodstream to create the ‘fight or ...
... flight' response. However, too much of anything is always harmful. Too much of stress, which lacks adequate outlet in terms of winding down exercises and/or recreational activities, creates a pressure cooker situation and can lead to an unwanted outburst. Stress counselling helps an individual accept that certain things might not be achievable or not worth disrupting family life and health for.
The counselor helps the person suffering from stress and anxiety to identify the stressors and anxiety generators. People suffering from anxiety can develop a fear of dogs, cats, spiders, water, heights, small places, open spaces, blood, thunder etc. Occasionally, people benefit from just some hand holding in the form of confidence boosters – very necessary for those suffering from anxiety. Anxiety stems from self doubt and a negative thought process which focuses on all that can go wrong. A counselor helps the patient to start focusing on all that can go right and all the positive impact it will have on his/her life and career. Anxiety counselling helps the person to find appropriate solutions and ways to implement those solutions.
