An Agra package, offered by tour operators, would include a day itinerary, followed by the majority of tourists who come in to Agra. This day trip would include a mandatory visit to the Taj Mahal, followed by one to Agra Fort, Sikandra and then on to Fatehpur Sikri, on the outskirts of the city.
A visit to India is incomplete without a tour to the city of Agra, where Taj Mahal, the seventh wonder of the world is situated. Taj Mahal symbolises love and is one of the most graceful and extravagant monuments in India.
Situated in the district of Uttar Pradesh, Agra attracts thousands of tourists every year, to view the epitome of endless love and devotion of Emperor Shah Jehan to his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal.
Taj Mahal, the mausoleum of Mumtaz, is also known as an architectural marble wonder. Taj Mahal was built after 12 years of hard labour of about 20,000 labourers and millions of rupees went into its making.
Taj Mahal has a main gateway or 'Darwazah', the garden with its ingenious waterways or 'Bageecha', the mosque or 'Masjid', the rest house or 'Naqqar Khana' and the main tomb building or 'Rauza'. ...
... The graves are kept inside the Taj Mahal and the cenotaphs are placed just above them to be viewed by the general public.
Agra Fort took eight years and thirty-five lakh rupees to complete and is one of the largest fortified residences built by the Mughal Empire. Shah Jahan was imprisoned by Aurangazeb inside the Agra Fort. From the Agra Fort he could view her tomb daily.
Fatehpur Sikri , originally named Sikri, was founded when Fatehpur (Victory Town) was erected to celebrate Akbar's conquest of Gujarat in June 1573. Emperor Akbar was laid to rest at Sikandra another architectural marvel. It was also the famous dwelling place and khanqah of Shiekh Salim Chishti, the famous Sufi saint whom Akbar revered for blessing him with child.
Akbar started building his own mausoleum, but his son Jehangir completed his tomb, popularly known as Sikandra after Sikandra Lodi. The tomb has three-storeyed red sandstone minarets and beautiful gardens surrounding the mausoleum.
Agra is also home to other structures like Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb, often referred to as ‘Baby Taj’, owing to the similarity in architecture between the two, Chini Ka Rauza and Soami Bagh Samadh which are included in most of the Agra packages. Even such packages offer budget hotels in Agra and affordable resorts in Agra for the convenient of the travellers.
Agra has one of the largest leather industries dealing with leather products ranging from footwear, bags and jackets. The other important item to shop for in Agra is marble items. Agra Petha, a sweet made with sugar and ash gourd is also worth a try.
Agra is well-connected and easily accessible by road, rail and air.
