There is something almost magical about a glass of fine wine. Whether it is a rich red wine or a golden white wine, indulging in a glass of this beverage can be a perfect way to enjoy life. There are plenty of places around the world that produce some fabulous wines. Hudson Valley occupies pride of place on the winery map. Hudson Valley Winery production is one of the oldest as far as American wines are concerned. Nature and human enterprise seem to have come together flawlessly to produce the best of wines in this region. Visiting the wineries here will see you just about 90 minutes or so from New York City.

History of the region

Hudson Valley Wine production dates back to 1677 when the very first vines were lovingly planted into this rich ground by the French Hugenots. Interestingly, this pre-dates California vines by almost a century! Hudson Valley Winery production has survived a huge number of natural and manmade challenges including wars, blight and even Prohibition. The onset of commercial production of Hudson Valley Wine was with the establishment of the Jacques Brothers Winery (known now as Brotherhood) ...
... way back in 1885. Today, there are several wineries that make the region famous across the world.

There are around 20 wineries that go into making the list of Hudson Valley Winery companies. Each of the names has a unique claim to fame. Millbrook Vineyard and Winery has found praise in the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Award winning beverages have come from Hudson Valley Wine makers. Millbrooks' Hudson Valley Wine is cultivated on thirty of the vineyards' 130 acres. Current varietals include Chardonnay (13 acres) Pinot Noir (5 acres), Cabernet Franc (7 acres), and TocaiFriulano (5 acres). Our winemaker, John Graziano, has been crafting these high quality wines for Millbrook since 1984.

What goes into making the wines?

Grapes of course but there is a dazzling array of sumptuous grapes that go into the making of the award winners here. Hudson Valley Winery thrives on grapes like Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Clairette, Syrah, Chambourchin and Baco Noir to name a very small handful. Depending on the wines that are being produced, there are very specific blends that are created. For instance, the Hudson Valley Wine and Grape Association specify guidelines for qualifying for the label of Heritage Wines. Grapes can be sourced only from the Hudson River region. White wine needs to be created from Seyval, Vidal, Vignoles and Cayuga grapes. Red wine will need to have Noriet, Dechaunac and hybrid grapes.
