The concept of geotechnical engineering is a branch of civil engineering that is concerned with the engineering behavior of earth materials. It uses the principal of soil mechanics or rock mechanics to investigate sub surface conditions. It helps in determining the physical, mechanical or even the chemical properties of the materials. A typical project begins with the review of project needs. The next major step is a site investigation of the soil, rock or even bedrock properties. This is very important as it is important to have a proper understanding of the area, where the engineering will take place. Investigations must include risks to human lives or even property from natural hazards.

This can be referred to as a ground investigation process. It is used by various agencies. In fact, military, mining, or even petroleum companies refer to this form of investigation if any construction activity does take place. The importance of a geo technical engineer is supreme. If any construction activity ...
... is to be undertaken one must hire a geo technical engineer. He/she designs the type of foundations, earthworks, that are needed for man made structures. The foundation structure is different in each case and varied according to the size of the construction.

As a geo technical engineer there is scope for work in costal or even ocean engineering. If there is a need to construct wharves, marinas or jetties the service of these engineers are of utmost importance. In the filed of ocean engineering there help can always be taken if there is a need to construct off shore structures such as oil platforms. Hence, if there is any plan to undertake any construction activity anywhere a proper soil study is necessary. This is where the importance of a geo technical engineer is always felt. He will guide the client in a proper manner.
