Just got new neighbors. From my view out the window they seem perfectly fine. Two kids, a dog, SUV. What's not to like. My problem is that I've always felt so darn uncomfortable about anything that has to do with house warming. I mean what the heck does house warming even mean? I guess it means I need to be polite, go talk with them, bring them a house warming gift or even throw them a neighborhood party. Seems daunting. So I sat down and wrote out a checklist for all the people like me who have no idea what to do when new neighbors move it.
1) You've got 10 days. Gulp. 10 days? For what you ask? Well you've got 10 days to get your buns across the street and say hello. And ...
... you better tell them that if they need anything to please ring your bell.
2) Buy a unique housewarming gift. Go online and look for a cool gift. Flowers are nice but wouldn't it be great if you bought them something that maybe gave them hope that they have a cool neighbor. It's worth a little effort.
3) Invite them for cocktails and bring another cool family from your neighborhood. This little get together doesn't have to be fancy. Just an hour. Just one drink. The idea is that they need to begin building their network in the neighborhood. Think of it as your chance to show them what a great decision they made.
4) Avoid giving them food. This is an outdated housewarming gift. The dreaded 'covered dish' died in 1959. Leave it alone. They don't even know you yet... you expect them to eat something you made?! Not happening. some people have no idea how to be good neighbors. In fact, some people are very bad neighbors and have no clue how to live next to others successfully at all. You may not subject your neighbours to excessive noise. Similarly, if your dog barks loudly or howls at night, you may be forced to rectify its behaviour, or to dispose of it. A nice house warming is simple. Be yourself, say hello and give them a unique house warming gift to remember you by. When you have time, throw a little cocktail party and have some fun. Don't subscribe to the old vestige that 'good fences make good neighbors'. You can do better than that. Good luck.
