Growing Your Own Vegetables
Growing fruits and vegetables seems overwhelming to most people, but it’s actually much simpler than it sounds, and the benefits are so rewarding that will become a lifestyle.
By growing your own vegetables you can:
Improve your family's health. Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day is one of the most important things you and your family can do to stay healthy. When they’re growing in your garden, you won’t be able to resist them. By growing your own vegetables, you not only will enjoy pesticide-free food; their vitamin content will be at their highest levels as you will eat them straight from the garden.
Save money. With all of this climate change going on, the price of fruit and vegetables has started to rise. So, why not save lots of money by being active outdoors growing your own fruit and vegetables. During the current difficult economic conditions, greenhouse gardening can provide you and your family with consistent supply of fruits and vegetables all year round. Greenhouse gardeners normally get the cost of building or buying a greenhouse with the savings from planting ...
... their own crops, within one year or two.
Reduce your environmental impact. If you grow vegetables organically without pesticides and herbicides, you’ll reduce air and water pollution, lessening your food consumption's environmental impact. Mass produced vegetables have to be trucked to stores. Fruits and vegetables imported from other continents are transported by airplane, process that has a significant impact on carbon footprint.
Enjoy the taste of fresh food. Nothing taste better that the food that you have grown on your patio. There’s something very special about taking the first bite from a tomato or cucumber you’ve picked from your garden.
Spend more time outdoor. By planting, watering and cleaning the garden, you are getting a good dose of outdoor exercise that is, certainly better for your health than sitting on the coach, watching television. Gardening is also a good therapy to relax and forget about the stress at work.
What do I need?
You can grow vegetables in anything, from a window box to square meter in your garden. It is not essential to have a large greenhouse or acres of land. If you want to grow veggies all year round, you will definitively need a greenhouse. You can find a wide variety of greenhouses in the market; small ones from, £20 to big greenhouses with horticultural gas. Find the one that suit better your needs, space and budget.
What type of fruit of vegetables can I grow?
There are many varieties of vegetables that can be grown in greenhouses all year round. When it comes to growing veggies, every country has different varieties that grow better in their particular climate.
In the UK, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers, and herbs can all be successfully grown in a greenhouse. You can try aubergines, cucumbers, peppers, chillies and tomatoes through the summer months. In the late summer, sow lettuces, salad leaves and carrots.
Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding of greenhouse crops. Varieties such as “Sunbaby” and “Shirley” are particularly well suited to the greenhouse, producing very tasty fruits with a delicious flavour. Tomatoes need to sown in mid-March, so they will be ready for transplanting in May.
Peppers and cucumber can also grow easily in greenhouses. When buying cucumber seeds, look out for the FI hybrid varieties, which produce female cucumber plants. If a flower is pollinated by a male plant, the fruit will be bitter-tasting. Cucumber seeds should be sown in mid-March and transplant pots when seedlings are big enough.
You can experiment with a variety of fruit and vegetables as long as you get more experience. Don’t miss a minute, start now!
