El Escorial

There are many worth seeing places around Madrid and El Escorial is one of them. It is located in the town of San Lorenzo which is at a distance of 45 kilometers from Madrid. It is a historic residence of Spanish kings and for the same reasons it is famous as Royal Seat of San Lorenzo. These days it is a museum, palace, school and at the same time a monastery. Another name for it is Escorial in short.

There are two complexes having great architectures that make up the Escorial. The other architectural complex has the name La Granijilla de La Fresneda. It is the hunting lodge for the kings and it is located at a distance of five kilometers from the royal palace. They are considered both part of the El Escorial because they used to be the home of power in Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

It was Philip II the King of Spain that built El Escorial in the sixteenth century. The architect hired by him was Juan Bautista de Toledo for this purpose. There are courtyards, passages, chambers, towers and a dome in Escorial. The material used in the making of Escorial is of great standard and quality that looks fabulous even today. A reason of fame of Escorial is that it was declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1984. An estimate shows that this place received over five hundred thousand visitors every year.
