FFF seeks to dispel the many misconceptions surrounding the flu vaccine. One common misconception is that a flu shot will cause you to become sick with the flu.

FFF Enterprises in Temecula, Calif., is the nation’s largest and most trusted distributor of flu vaccine. The company distributes a complete portfolio of flu vaccine from all U.S.-approved manufacturers, which means there are more ways than ever to get vaccinated against seasonal flu. From traditional flu shots and high-dose vaccines for those 65 and over, to the intradermal microinjection system vaccine and intranasal spray vaccine, there is a flu vaccine suited to just about everyone.

FFF seeks to dispel the many misconceptions surrounding the flu vaccine. One common misconception is that a flu shot will cause you to become sick with the flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this is not possible because the flu viruses in a flu vaccine shot have been inactivated, which means they cannot make you sick with the flu. Another myth is that you can get the flu from the flu nasal spray. Even though the flu nasal spray is ...
... a live virus, it is a weakened version, meaning it cannot cause you to become ill. The CDC acknowledges that side effects sometimes include runny nose, chills, nasal congestion or cough; however, these are comparatively mild and short-lasting when compared to contracting the flu.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older receive a flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available every year. Those at high risk for flu-related complications, such as young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older, should make it a high priority to be vaccinated against the flu virus. Complications from the flu lead to more deaths each year than all vaccine-preventable diseases combined.

Although flu symptoms can begin with a cough or sore throat, they can quickly escalate to fever, fatigue and vomiting. People who are sick with the flu are often very weak, and miss valuable days of work and school as a result. They are also highly infectious; it’s not uncommon for one person to infect the rest of their family with the flu – especially if no one in the household took the time to get a flu vaccine.

Even though people know the flu is a contagious disease, many continue to delay the trip to the pharmacy or doctor’s office for their annual flu vaccine. Some believe that “it’s just the flu” and therefore no big deal. Last flu season was mild, but every flu season is different because virus strains mutate; the severity of the 2012-13 flu season remains to be seen.

Although flu season usually lasts from October through January, people should begin receiving their annual flu vaccine as early as September, if it is available. While the official flu season is still a few months away, it is not too early to mark your calendar and make an appointment with your doctor to schedule vaccines for yourself and your family. Receiving an annual flu vaccine will not only protect you from getting the virus, it will safeguard loved ones, coworkers and friends. Call your healthcare provider today.
