Siena is a classic medieval town in Tuscany that is famous for its horse popularly known as Palio that is held twice a year. It has been declared a world heritage site. It is Italy’s prettiest town with several historical monuments and artwork that attract tourists from across the globe.
Siena is 200km north of Rome and 60km south of Florence near the center of the Tuscany region. Siena is connected to whole Italy and Europe with a number of transportation links. It takes 2-3 hours from Rome and 3-4 hours from Milan via train. The closest airports are Florence and Pisa. Besides that it is also linked to other cities of Tuscany via bus service.
Siena’s most famous festival is Palio Di Siena, a horse race run in Piaza di compo on July 2 and August 16.This is a highly competitive race and winning it is a great honor. Palazzo Pubblico is Siena’s Gothic town hall building and the bell tower- Torre Del Mangia, is 102 meters tall and is the second highest medieval Bell Tower in Italy. Taking tower’s 505 steps you can walk it up for some great views of Siena.
Fonte Gaia is an ornate fountain carved by Jacopo Della Quercia in the fifteenth century.
Piazza Del Duomo- another beautiful square and home to Siena's Duomo has a black and white facade with intricate carvings and statues. The beautiful marble floor is decorated with a series of inlaid pictures. The Museo Dell 'Opera del Duomo has some beautiful art works and a panoramic terrace. The Baptistery and the Crypt under the Duomo present an interesting archaeological look at the Cathedral's past.
Siena's art museum, Pinacoteca Nazionale, houses some of Italy's greatest paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries. The Museum opens daily at 8:15 but closes at 1:30 on Sundays and Mondays.
