Chennai is the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu, situated in the southern part of India. It is the forth most populated city in the country and has a historical background too. It accounts for more than 45% of the total automobile exports from India. The Tamil film industry is famous world-wide and is commonly known as Kollywood. The name ‘Chennai’ is derived from the work Chennapattinum and the word actually meant the face of the temple.

Historical importance

The city of Chennai had an economic, military and administrative importance from 1st century onwards, as it was ruled by the Pallavas, then by Chera, Chola and Pandyas. Some important constructions in Chennai were also made by the Portuguese and the Dutch people. When India was ruled by the British people they considered Chennai as an important location due to it being a busy port city. Chennai was the only city which was shelled by the Germans during the first world war.

There are beautiful beaches and the Marina Beach, which is the longest beach in India, it is about 15 km long, is situated in Chennai. The St. George Fort was made by the British in the year 1639 and was one of the settlements of the British in India. There are many art galleries, which organize regular shows from the artists of the whole state. There are places of workship where lakhs of people go for religious purposes and to pray for the God, these temples and religious places are very old such as Kapaleeshwarar Temple, St. George’s Cathedral etc are good places to visit. Apart from these there are many parks, shopping complexes and Theatres where one can find a great time pass as well as good entertainment.

Cultural Importance of the city

Chennai is one of the major hubs for cultural activities in India. The Music Season is organized here every year in the month of December to mark the opening of Madras Music Academy. Kollywood is the Tamil Film industry and produces good domestic as well as international movies and documentaries. One of the most famous musicians, A.R. Rehman is from city of Chennai, and who was awarded two Oscars in the year 2009 for his music contributions in the movie Slumdog Millennium. Apart from this all the major festivals of India like Diwali, Holi, Christmas and Eid are celebrated in this city with combined joy and pleasure.
