The early designs and blueprints were drafted in paper using pencils and other drawing instruments. It was a time consuming task and the designers could not edit or modify the designs easily. Moreover, separate drafts had to be prepared for different views and angles, which required a lot of time and effort. With the advents of computers, the process became much simpler and faster. CAD or Computer Aided Design comprises of the use of computers in creating, editing, and analyzing designs and drawings. CAD drafting continues to be used extensively in architecture and other fields of engineering like construction and manufacture of machine parts and components.

There are many benefits when using CAD to draft designs. The result is a drawing that is more accurate than the one developed using conventional pen and paper methods. CAD is also cost effective and simple to use. It also offers several features and attributes that enable the designer to draft complex patterns and drawings like the elevation or plan of a house, or machine cross-sections with ease. Another advantage of CAD ...
... is that it offers the flexibility to draw in both two and three dimensions. This gives the designers the flexibility to view the drawing in many angles and perspectives.

2d CAD drafting is carried on using two-dimensional vector based drafting. The drafting adds reliability and effectiveness to the design. For instance, the features related to a plot of land in terms of its dimensions, boundaries, and area can be accurately analyzed and calculated. One can even transfer the designs to other engineers and designers easily. Any changes or modifications done to the design can be saved which is a great help in keeping the data updated. Using CAD, projects, however simple or complex, can be completed and delivered within the stipulated time.

One of the practical uses of CAD is to design plans for homes and apartments. An architectural home plan designed using this technology gives a realistic view of the building to the clients and the architect. It allows the designers to view the home from every angle. One can even use CAD to develop plans for interiors and exteriors of the home. Complex floor plans can be drafted and modified effortlessly. With the help of CAD, the architect can show a detailed view of the home to the clients in a format that is easy for them to understand. It also minimizes the scope of error in the design and offers the designers the flexibility to draft complicated designs easily.
