The role of a nurse in society is extremely important and deserves great appreciation. Nurse is a health care professional who teams up with doctors and other members of a health care organization, and is responsible for cure, safety and speedy recovery of patients. She/he is also responsible for health maintenance within families and communities as well as treatment of life-threatening diseases.
Nurses help in dealing and overcoming in medical emergencies in hospitals, communities and any other place where, in case, infectious disease spreads out, in a wide range of activities. This profession is generally dominated by females, but male nurses also do their part of jobs. In some European countries, over 20% nurses are male.
Nursing was first founded by Florence Nightingale, who worked dedicatedly for the wounded soldiers in the Crimean War at the beginning of the 20th century. She was the pioneer of Nursing, which later on came to be accepted as a full form profession. Practice of a Nurse is generally termed as Registered Nurse and this profession is protected and regulated by law of a country. Currently, a shortage of nurses is found in many parts of the world, due to stressful work environments and increasing number of patients in hospitals.
Nurses are distinguished mainly by the area they work in, such as critical care, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, adult acute care, community health care, out-patient department, gynecology, surgery, etc. As nursing roles are continually changing, the Nursing education should include continuing education activities to encourage and promote Nursing as an inevitable form of profession in the world.
During surgery or dealing with intensive care patients, nurses perform a commendable role. Besides helping surgeons in operation theaters, nurses continually monitor the patient’s progress on computer screens. As nowadays, computers are most important in medicines and all the other fields; hospitals are well-adequately equipped with computers.
The doctors also monitor keenly the patient’s treatment chart and diagnosis, on his laptop in the office, anytime 24 hrs a day, thereby giving further instructions to the nurse in-charge of that patient in the hospital. As computers are installed everywhere in hospitals, it makes the work of nurses a lot easier.
Today, more and more girls thrive to adopt nursing as a profession owing to its scope and importance. They work hard to achieve diploma, certificate, bachelors or masters level after completing training. The aim of the nursing community world-wide is to ensure quality care for all while maintaining their standards, code of ethics, competencies, credentials and training.
Nursing is recognized as the noblest profession in the world. There are different educational fields to become a professional nurse that involves extensive study of nursing theory, practice and training in clinical skills. They care for individuals of all ages belonging to different cultural backgrounds and treat their illness, notwithstanding the patient’s physical, emotional or psychological needs.
