Carved out from the neighboring districts of Kozhikode and Kannur, the district of Wayanad in Kerala was formed on November 1, 1980. Wayanad is known for its unmatched natural beauty and tranquility. Kalpetta is the district headquarters of this twelfth district of Kerala. The name Wayanad was derived from the Malayalam words, Vayal Naadu which means The Land of Paddy Fields. True to its name Wayanad offers endless view of green paddy fields, numerous waterfalls, unexplored forests, interesting and fascinating tribal lives and secrets, adventurous activities like trekking and many more.

Wayanad offers a wide number of sites for the tourists to visit. The Chembra Peak, Kuruva Dweep, Meenmutty Falls, Lakkidi, Pookode Lake, Pakshipayhalam and Edakkal Caves are a few places visited by the tourists in Wayanad.

There are mainly Five Ghat roads to reach Wayanad from the coastal areas of Kerala. The Kozhikode-Mysore National Highway 212 passes through the district of Wayanad. Wayanad is well-connected through roads to all the major towns and cities of Kerala and the neighboringstates. At about 75 km away from the district headquarters of Kalpetta lies the nearest international airport and railway station of Kozhikode. Other railway stations near to Wayanad are at Thalassery, Kannur and Mysore.
