Roulette has been one of the most popular European casino games for about four centuries. Your goal as a roulette player is simply to predict on which of the roulette wheel numbers the ball lands at the end of the wheel spin. However, in order to play in roulette in a casino you should be acquainted with the different betting types and the different roulette wheels.

There two different types of roulette wheels are the European and the American wheel. The European wheel has 37 numbers on it from zero to 36 while its American equivalent contains 38 numbers including two zeros and the numbers from 1 to 36. This difference is significant since when you are playing a European roulette you can enjoy better odds and a lower house edge comparing to the American roulette.

The roulette table layout is divided into two betting areas: the inside bets and the outside bets. The inside bets area features each number individually while the outside bets area is divided into boxes and into groups of numbers. Inside Bets

Straight up or En plein: bet on a single number. The payout is 35 to 1
Split Bet or Cheval: bet on two numbers. The payout is 17 to 1
Street Bet or Transversale: bet on three numbers. The payout is 11 to 1
Corner Bet or Carre: bet on four numbers. The payout is 8 to 1
Line Bet or Sixainne: bet on six numbers. The payout is 5 to 1

Outside Bets

Column Bets or Colonne: bet on the 12 number in one of the 3 vertical columns. The payout is 2 to 1
Dozen Bets or Douzaine: bet on 12 consecutive numbers. The payout is 2 to 1.
Red, Black or Rouge, Noir: the payout is 1 to 1
Even, Odd or Pair, Impair: the payout is 1 to 1

To play roulette, you simply place your chips on the betting area of your choice and waits for the croupier to spin the wheel. When the ball is about to land, the croupier would announce that no more bets are allowed to be placed on the layout. When the wheel finishes its spin, the croupier would announce the winning number by placing a dolly on the winning number spot on the roulette table layout. The players whose chips are on the winning number will be paid according to the payout rules.
