Burma was historically a British colony. Filled with Romance there is an old song from those colonial times called "On the road to Mandalay" which is a romantic view of those old times. But the history of this region is thousands of years old and there was a civilization there that pre-dates the Christian era by at least 500 years.

In more modern times the Colonial era lasted from 1848 until 1948. There had been a lot of resentment and opposition to British rule. Occupied by the Japanese during Word War II and the scene of some bloody fighting Burma was pretty devastated by the end. Britain itself was rapidly de-colonising after the war and granted independence to Burma in 1948. For the next 14 years it was a democratic country until the military stage a coup d'etat in 1962 and has retained power ever since.

However it has recently embarked on a series of reforms aimed at opening up the country and starting to exploit some of the vast reservoir of natural resources it has available. The recent lifting of the restriction on Aung San Suu Kyi is just the latest in the liberalization and democratization of Myanmar.

Myanmar, ...
... having closed itself off from the rest of the world for many years, is now opening itself up to visitors from abroad. The country is largely unspoiled and the tourist industry is in its infancy and so one is able visit the temples and pagodas as they have been for hundreds of years. It has astonishing natural beauty which is everywhere and the climate is warm sub tropical.

The country itself is rich in natural resources which have not been over exploited and so there is a happy future if they are managed well.

Myanmar Tours will take you to many of the places of interest. While on your Myanmar Holidays you should see Yangon (the old Rangoon) is surrounded by water and has tree lined streets, Pagodas and old style British Colonial buildings on the various lake. The center of Yangon is the massive Shwedagon Pagoda. One of the most magnificent monuments on earth, it is a place of worship and relaxation.

Mandalay is up the Ayeyarwaddy River and has the Golden Palace Monastery where one of the most revered statues of Buddha resides. Continually having gold leaf added by devout worshipers the actual shape has been changed except for the serene face. Mandalay is also a major shopping centre for the upper section of Myanmar where the hill people bring their goods to trade with the townspeople. Take a walk up the Sagaing hill for the panorama over the river and surrounding country.

There are many other stunning places to visit: Bagan with its 5,000 monuments attest to spirituality and the ancient pagodas along the Irrawaddy river. There is the Inle Lake which is 100km long but narrow with over 200 lakeside villages.

And so it goes. Consult the website and Travel to Myanmar to experience a truly wonderful unspoilt country which is only just opening itself up to tourists.
