Obligation Travel Impacting Leisure Travel

While cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages often provide the means for people to travel, the motivation behind such travel is often done out of obligation vs. a desire to just get away and enjoy leisure time.

Demand appearances from such things as weddings, reunions, graduations, new babies, and business trips are resulting in people taking fewer vacations than desired.

41 percent of Americans who travel reported in a recent survey that they spend the bulk of their travel budget on obligation travel. 89 percent of respondents reported they would take more leisure travel if they had the time and money to do so.

Harris interactive conducted an online survey of over 2,000 U.S. travelers the end of July of 2011. The survey found that 94 percent of the respondents claimed that they would take one additional trip than they had planned if they could afford it.

One suggestion for people who would like to take more leisure trips is to try combining obligation travel with leisure time. If work takes you to an interesting family destination, such as Orlando, consider bringing the spouse and ...
... kids so that they can enjoy the local theme parks and you can be with them at least part of the time.

If you need to travel back home for a reunion, add some time afterwards for the family to partake in activities most enjoyable to them.

Remember if you are already paying for a flight, it often is more economical to just add on additional vacation time vs. booking an entirely separate flight and vacation at a later date.
