Despite the many applications that fluorochemicals have in our society, they have only emerged recently as something that is used on a regular basis in commercial products. It was not until the 1930s when the sponsorship of various companies in the field of manufacturing fluorochemicals began because of the discovery of Freon by General Motors. Various companies began to take the concept of Freon to develop uses with it for everything from cleaning to aerosols.

One discovery that came from fluorochemicals is Teflon, which is an inert material that can stand up to most acids and corrosive materials. It will stay solid at a temperature much higher than any other plastics that had been developed before that time. When the Second World War broke out, Teflon made with fluorochemicals was used to coat the nose cones of artillery fuses, becoming famous as well in the Manhattan Project for its ability to stand up against corrosion from the production of Uranium.

In the 1960s, fluorochemicals and Teflon moved out of the army sector and began to change the world of pots and pans with the non-stick coating properties of Teflon. ...
... The research of DuPont continued into the 1970s with the development of high grade plastics for the process of producing aluminum for home siding, wire insulation and as part of the sealant market.

The development of fluorochemicals has progressed strongly over the past 80 years, with a worldwide demand for the products that companies like Halocarbon make. Countries in the third world are even looking at fluorochemicals as a way to help satisfy their desire to enter the 21st century with a viable and competitive manufacturing process. Some countries believe the manufacturing of fluorochemicals can do this for them.
As a result, the potential of the fluorochemicals to help developing countries industrialize and create higher income levels is beginning to be explored.
