A prefabricated building is as its name suggests pre made in a sort of kit form. It is manufactured in a factory in pieces for transportation and erection on site.

The principle behind a prefabricated building is actually quite old and it was used as far back as the 1800’s. Using prefabrication as a building method came into its own during the last war when conventional buildings were in short supply. This popularity continued after the war when there was a housing shortage and a quick solution had to be found. Although the nature of prefabricated buildings is that they are temporary, they are surprisingly durable and last far longer than might be imagined. Indeed homes erected in the post war years were often pulled down in spite of the fact that they were still serviceable.

... green and modern credentials. It is relatively easy to use environmentally friendly materials in a prefabricated home as buildings are built in parts. So, for example, someone could choose a ‘green’ walling and roof system and / or solar panels. It is also relatively simple to customise prefabricated buildings according to location, materials used, layout, design number of rooms and climate. All of which gives people much more flexibility and choice.

Commercial prefabricated buildings are commonly used by retail and industry and have many advantages over traditional bricks and mortar. Fast food restaurants and supermarkets use prefabricated buildings as well as many manufacturing companies for warehouses and factories.

Commercial prefabricated buildings are engineered from either a steel or aluminium frame. Steel is renowned for its strength but doesn’t have a high tolerance to corrosion. Aluminium on the other hand is much lighter but has a far greater tolerance to corrosion. Both options perform very well as sub frames for industrial prefab buildings and can accommodate a wide range of wall and roof options to suit various storage or operational requirements.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a commercial prefabricated building is the speed of construction. In relation to a traditional build project months can be saved ensuring projects are up and running quicker. Speed not only creates faster returns on investment, but translates as cost savings as time is money. Savings are also achieved however with much lower design and labour costs.

As with prefabricated dwellings, the green credentials are high – in particular using aluminium as it is 100% recyclable.
