Starting Out As An It Contractor
At some stage in their careers people who work in it will take the decision as to whether they want to stay as a permanent
employee at their company and to pursue a career through that route or whether they want to become an IT Contractor.
There are two types of people who stay as permanent employees, those who take a long term view and eschew quick monetary gain
in order to make their way up the company ladder and to greater standing in the company and maybe greater monetary gain in
the long run and those who are simply not the temperament to become contractors.
The latter people will be tempted by the extra money that can be gained by becoming a contractor but their envy is trumped by
their fear of having the bills to pay with maybe no money coming in.
Basically it is too risky for them.
Contractors can expect to earn double what they did previously when they make the jump from permanent worker to contractor –
and that’s without the tax advantages of taking the Limited Company route.
Often permanent workers ask if they should quit their permanent ...
... jobs so that they are available to take contract jobs at
short notice as companies often want contractors to start ‘next week’.
Although this may be the case with some clients, others will be prepared to wait for the right person and the last thing you
want is to be an out-of-work contractor with no experience of contracting.
I know that contractors are risk takers by nature but that really is kamikaze.
It’s best to keep an eye on the contractor job websites and wait for the right one
to come along.
When people become contractors they have to take the decision as to whether they want to go the Umbrella Company route or to
have a Limited Company set up for them.
There are several websites like www.ITContractor.com which will do a Company set up for them for free.
Once you have started that first contract, for goodness sake don’t go mad and start buying flash cars or going on fancy
nights out or holiday in exotic locations.
Build some money up first otherwise, if things go badly, you may find yourself out of work and with a large tax bill to pay.
If you do things right in the beginning you can have a long and lucrative career as an IT Contractor.
