When You Want To Have Small Talk About Gold
What do we really know about gold? When we’re caught in a situation where we really have to talk about gold, what can we say about it? Say you're in a wedding or cocktail party and the lively subject is centered solely on gold that is running for hours, are you one of those stumped for information? And the only thing you can say is, “Gold is colored…gold.”
Fear not because here are facts about gold that you can use in small talk scenarios. So as not to sound geeky or, worst, a know-it-all Brainiac, we’ll put a spin on it to make it seem fun.
Uses of Gold
Everybody knows that gold is mostly associated with jewelry. Fact is 78% of the world’s gold is turned into body adornments. These are earrings, rings, necklaces and even teeth. But aside from, the usual gold bars that pirates kill each other for and bankers sitting on top of them inside the vault with a golden twinkle in their eyes, what are the other uses of gold?
Gold is also used as an industrial product. Electronics are
very dependent on gold as this soft metal is a very good conductor of electricity and doesn’t corrode easily. ...
... Most of our highly sophisticated cellphones, laptops and tablets have gold in them. So just in case you’re a techie in dire need of money with a hoard of broken computers in your room, you can probably just sell all the gold in them.
Gold is also an environmental activist. Gold is now being used on cars as a way to reduce polluted emissions by 30%. Now isn’t that friendly? We can see Al Gore nodding in approval. In fact some cars are even built purely of gold. But mostly it’s just to say, “My car is made of gold.”
Gold as Food
Did you know that you can ingest gold and not die of metal poisoning? You can die of alcoholic poisoning but never this sun-colored element. It’s totally devoid of toxins and doesn’t cause irritation on the stomach. But just make sure it’s pure gold and not those 18karat kinds. Those have mixes of other metals and they’re not ingestible.
Gold is a god
Gold is a god and his name is Khrysos, or Chrysus, depending on your taste. He’s not a major Greek god like Zeus or Poseidon or even Aphrodite that affords a mention in the Percy Jackson books. But he’s definitely one of those gods that litter Greek mythology. Nothing much is known of him except he is the god of gold and this line: Khrysos (Gold) is a child of Zeus; neither moth nor rust devoureth it; but the mind of man is devoured by this supreme possession.
