Aggie Mackenzie Explains The Importance Of Cleaning Your Carpet
Aggie MacKenzie, famous for the TV series How Clean is Your House, has teamed up with Rug Doctor to investigate the health of the nation’s carpets. The What Lies Beneath campaign has uncovered some surprising evidence; our carpets may not be as clean as we think. In a recent interview with the company, Aggie explained the findings.
The campaign aims to build up awareness of “all the nasties lurking in our carpets.” Aggie explained that although people may know there is dust, hair, pollen and skin cells amongst the pile, bacteria are a far more sinister threat. She said that these are “potentially very harmful bacteria that could cause disease,” and gave salmonella, e-coli, listeria and campylobacter as examples.
When asked why she was supporting the campaign, Aggie said it is “really important to get your carpets deep cleaned.” However, people tend to forget how dirty their carpets are or aren’t aware of the dangers.
While carpets might look clean, they often aren’t. Aggie suggested that using a carpet cleaning machine can make all the difference: “It’s not until you actually do that ...
... you realise how filthy it is.” The colour, feel and smell of the carpet can all be improved. “It’s just amazing, the difference it makes,” she said.
Rug Doctor conducted surveys as part of their research and found that while between 75 and 80% of people think their houses are clean, 40 to 45% have never had their carpet deep cleaned. This has serious health implications. Aggie explained that some of the bacteria that have been found can cause food poisoning and stomach ulcers.
The ‘Queen of Clean’ also found that the research bore out her own experiences working on How Clean is Your House. Cardiff was found to be especially dirty, and Aggie recalled that the Welsh were among the worst offenders in terms of keeping their homes clean when she was shooting the programme.
One of the problems is that rather than “spring cleaning,” people are increasingly resorting to “skim cleaning.” Aggie suggested that people should deep clean their carpets twice a year, and people who smoke, have allergies, pets or small children may want to do it more often. Although it may seem like a hassle, she said that “when you witness the colour of the water coming out of the carpet, you will need no further convincing.”
People who don’t clean their carpet using a professional machine could be putting themselves and their family at risk. Aggie was quick to point out that, potentially, “you could become very ill from not cleaning your carpet.” When you think we occasionally tread in dog mess in the street, and walk around the house in the same shoes, it’s easy to see why. People often lounge around on the floor, watching TV or playing, and in doing so could pick up some nasty bacteria.
Rug Doctor produce a range of home cleaning products, including their world famous carpet cleaning machine.
