The whole concept and technology of electronic cigarettes are relatively new. Even then these smokeless cigarettes are becoming gradually more popular as each day goes by, throughout the UK.

The levels of popularity weren’t really recorded until of late. Recently a leading UK-based electronic cigarette producer commissioned research to check the growth of these cigarettes. This alternative to tobacco smoking, according to the results of the research, yielded far more than the amount of sales expected by companies.

The research was conducted by USurv.com which asked about thousand members of the public about their opinions and attitudes towards tobacco and smoking in general. The survey randomly sampled smokers and non-smokers in order to make the survey representative. 12% were occasional smokers, 63% were non-smokers and a quarter wee non-smokers.

Results of the survey

Though the survey resulted in a majority of positive answers, 47 percent of the sample population pointed out that they weren’t that well informed about electronic cigarettes. They felt due to this lack of information they wouldn’t want to express any definitive opinion. However, they did ask for more material on e-cigarettes so they could educate themselves and other smokers they knew as well.

The survey also asked questions related to what the people disliked most about smoking. Almost 58 percent, which is a majority, answered that bad breath due to tobacco smoking and the foul smell of tobacco left on the fingers, clothes and in the air, were the most putting-off facts. About 46% stated the bad breath factor.

Only 37% interestingly objected to the deterioration that tobacco would cause to the body. About 38 percent of the sample population objected to the effects of the smoke due to passive smoking, on the health of the non-smokers.

The survey and its results can be educative even to the health authorities of UK. The sample population responded with image-related issues instead of health implications, in spite of the expressive health campaigns that highlighted the negatives of smoking.

Even though most of the respondents to the survey said that they felt unqualified to comment on the effectiveness of e-cigarettes, almost 83% admitted to having heard about them and seen their marketing strategies.

Most of the respondents even appreciated this concept of alternative smoking as they believed that e-cigarettes were healthier than the regular tobacco cigarettes. The e-cigarettes haven’t yet been regulated by the health officials or the Government and cannot be sold as ‘stop-smoking’ devices but the popularity of this idea is surely spreading like wildfire.
