THE LEADERSHIP DRIVE OF THE POWER OF CONSISTENCY

So, why then are we not able to pursue the same when we have adopted leadership roles at work, office and in society? This is the big question.

Let us redefine the same story in five small ways that catch us lacking in ways and means to have the same rectified.

Consistency has been a hall mark not just for individuals but for great empires and civilizations too. One of the greatest examples has been the Mogul Empires falling to pieces not just by the British domination, but through their own internal inconsistencies.

REASONS FOR CONSISTENCY

Consistency allows measurability

All of us take up new ideas and exercises but soon drop them for many reasons. Is it fair to decide on anything or how it works unless we have tried it for at least 6 months? It takes this much time to figure out if the new activity, venture will work or not. But many times we surrender our new initiatives, processes before having tried it consistently for a reasonable period. Allowing this test of consistency can make a huge difference. So many minor tweaks can be ...
... implemented. We know that in a business it is always the many minor tweaks making the difference rather than the major overhauls.

Consistency creates responsibility

When we require our employees to be accountable for their deliverables and goals, it’s only fair enough that they expect the same from the leadership. Allowing time for the subordinates and being available for them as a team seeks to establish the consistency that a project or particular aspect of business requires that often the catalyst for taking the initiatives to a successful end.

Great reputations are built on the platform of consistency

Great businesses have always shown a track record of success. This cannot be shown or established when one is constantly changing ideas, adopting new things and constantly shifting gears. Such efforts fail because by the time they reach the finish line they are dropped by the wayside for a newer initiative not because the tactic was flawed or the goals were not clear but simply because there was no fuel of consistency in the team to reach its set desired objective.

Consistency supports the Test of Relevancy

Not just our employees and customers, all of us need a predictable flow of information to be on track and this comes from being consistent. Or else all the data supportive of such a venture is wasted and the initiatives lost and made irrelevant. Many a time we are witness to a campaign or initiative adopted only to lose steam before it gathers speed. Only when such initiatives such as advertisements, newsletters have been run consistently can the results become meaningful and relevant.

Consistency maintains the message we want to spread

We can see in real life that our subordinates and team members attach more relevance and attention to what we do rather than what we say. This is a natural law. This when developed consistently serves as a model in our leadership and gives the feedback on how our team behaves. When we treat a meeting as unimportant, it unconsciously is picked by the team. Soon we will discover they too treat a meeting unimportant either to their team mates or customers.

On the final analysis, when we see that when some things do not work, it pays to look back and see if consistency has been a casualty. Were we not serious? Did we shift gears quickly? Did we change directions too fast? Did a part of the team not deliver on a commitment? Most of the times one can find that the reasons indicate to lack of consistency and if this is looked into, a major cog in the wheel can be considered rectified.

All great businesses have showed one trait over time - a track.
