Can A Chiropractor Help With A Serious Ligament Injury?
Chiropractors are known to treat neck pain and back pain but can it help rehabilitate a serious ligament injury? Before you call a chiropractor right away, you should know that chiropractors do not just accept cases immediately. They want to make sure that they are capable of treating you first. They evaluate your condition and run a series of physical tests to determine if chiropractic can help or if you are better off seeking a physical therapist. Just like doctors, they prioritize your health and wellness; they will not risk creating more complications to patients.
The most common ligament injuries happen on the knees. You have probably heard about anterior cruciate ligament or popularly known as ACL. When there is injury to the ACL, it is often called a sprain and the ligament can be overly stretched or torn. A tear in the ACL is excruciatingly painful but this is a common ligament injury among athletes. A sprain or tear in the ACL can be caused by trauma to the opposite side of the knee and then the ligament in the inner side of knee tears up. The tear is described to have a pop sound and the knee buckles sideways ...
... after it.
Aside from direct trauma to the opposite side of the knee, there are movements that can put strain on the ACL. Hyperextension of the knee is a common cause of an ACL ligament injury. Stretching the knee beyond 10 degrees is hyperextension. Pivoting of the knee with forceful inward turning of the lower leg also damages the ACL. Athletes or even non-athletes to hyperextends or mistakenly rotates the lower leg internally will suffer from an ACL tear. The severity of the injury will depend on three things. The first is the position of the knee the time it was injured. The second is the direction of blow to the knee and the last is the force of this blow.
Hyperextension of the knees usually occurs in sports like volleyball, soccer, football, skiing and soccer. Inward rotation of the tibia usually occurs in sports like basketball, soccer, tennis and football. Other injuries to the ACL occur in sports like gymnastics, wrestling, running and martial arts. Any symptom of an ACL injury should be checked on immediately. Leaving it untreated will just make the ACL injury worse.
Can a chiropractor help you with an ACL injury? First of all, ACL tears will require surgery and you will need to talk to a surgeon about this. A chiropractor can only help during your recovery or in certain cases, when the ACL injury is still mild. Since the knee is a joint that relies heavily on the stability of the muscles, the body’s anatomical components should be examined. This includes the lower back, hip, pelvis, foot and ankle because all these body parts have a direct influence to the knee.
