Don’t Let Your Curtains Down: Give Them A Great Curtain Pole
You’ve just bought some luxurious curtains and they look great. You get them home, undo the wrappings and marvel at their quality. Finally, a touch of class, you think, as you shake them out and hang them up. The curtains look okay, but they just don’t hang right. You take them down and try again. Nope. Perhaps that piece of twine strung between two nails has had its day.
If this sounds silly, it is, but you’d be surprised how many people use something cheap and nasty to hang their curtains from. They don’t use string, perhaps, but poorly fitting, low quality curtain poles are just as ugly. This is a particular problem with bay windows, where some people cram in three or four poles to try to cope with the curved space. It doesn’t need to be this way. Modern technology means there are some innovative, and infinitely more attractive, options.
Curtain poles
A pole can be a brilliant way of showing off your curtains as there are so many different designs and materials available. Some have rings for hanging the curtains, while others have gliders. Gliders allow the curtains to be drawn with less friction ...
... and the pole itself to be more slender, although rings create a more traditional feel and place more emphasis on the pole itself. Most poles have a range of finials so they can be easily accessorised to match the style of the room.
Curtain tracks
Curtain tracks are similar to poles with gliders, but are generally flatter in profile and even less visible. With a track, the focus is on the curtains, not what they’re hanging from. Some designs have a cord so the curtains can be operated like blinds. These are a great option for heavy curtains, or where the window is very high or in an awkward place. Instead of having to reach to top of the curtain to move it, you just pull the cord. This is also a bonus with pale or delicate curtains as they will not be handled as much.
Electric curtain rails
Rather than having a cord to open and close the curtains, electric designs function automatically. These give all the advantages of corded tracks, but add even more convenience and security to the mix. Not only do the curtains open and close on their own, this can be in response to a timer or light levels. The curtains closing automatically when it gets dark can be especially useful in winter, when they will help keep the heat in. The system can also deter thieves while you are on holiday, and is useful for the elderly or people with mobility problems.
Bay windows
Bay windows in particular benefit from new technology, as poles and rails can now be bent to fit the space perfectly. Whereas people used to use lots of poles to achieve the same effect, having a continuous curved rail is a much more practical and attractive solution.
