The term ‘wallet’, as we know it now, refers to a flat case that is used to store currency or money. This was not the original meaning of the term, however, and in ancient times, it used to refer to a sack used to store provisions, in much the same manner as a survival pack. It was only in the 1950s that wallets in their current incarnation came to be known as such. Strangely enough, in the 19th century, wallets were small pouches in which valuables were kept that were attached to your belt, as it was actually considered rude for wallets to be placed in pockets. Today, however, wallets, and wallets for men, in particular, are specifically designed to be carried in your back pocket.

The most common wallets are definitely bi fold wallets. These ‘standard wallets’ consist of a compartment long enough to fit bills that has been folded once in the middle, thus making it small enough to be carried in the back pocket. Some bi folds have also been made to include a zippered or fold-out coin compartment, although this is more common in wallets found in Europe than in America thanks to the larger size of European coins.

In terms of construction, these wallets are almost identical to bi fold wallets, except that instead of a single fold in the centre, they are folded over twice. Tri fold wallets are suitable for those who prefer narrower wallets, although being folded over twice naturally makes these wallets thicker than bi fold wallets.

Some men, especially those who work in offices where suits are typically worn, carry what are known as breast wallets. These are long wallets that fit into the breast pocket of a jacket, and are long enough for notes to be stored without having to be folded. Breast wallets are particularly useful for storing checks and other banking documents that will not easily fit into smaller wallets.

Some men prefer to keep their wallets in their front pockets, instead of in their back pockets, as then there is no need to remove their wallets from before sitting down. Sitting down with a wallet in your back pocket can be highly uncomfortable, whereas if it was in your front pocket, then there would be no discomfort at all. Most front pockets are not built to accommodate wallets, however, so front pocket wallets are designed to be slimmer than other wallets, usually consisting of a single piece of leather with a few slots for cards and a clip on the reverse side for notes.
