Fleet Week New York - A Great New York Event

This exciting New York Event takes place from Wednesday, May 23, 2012 through Wednesday, June 1, 2011 and many of the Events take place at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum but there are also lots of free activities, including ship tours in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island, performances and demonstrations around New York City. For some of the Events there is an admission, though there are many events where Military, retired and active are admitted free.

A tradition that began in 1984 to honor the US Navy and Marine Corps, this year’s parade will be headed up by the USS Iwo Jima, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that measures 844 feet from bow to stern.

Alongside the Iwo Jima will be the USS New York, an amphibious transport dock constructed partially of materials salvaged from the World Trade Center. The entry of these two magnificent vessels into New York harbor will mark the beginning of one of the more exciting weeks of the year in the Big Apple. On Thursday, May 24th, you can take some ship board tours at Stapleton Pier on Staten Island and Pier 88 on 48th Street. While you’re at the latter, be sure to go to the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum on 46th Street, one of the sponsors of Fleet Week and a great draw for adults and children alike. There is an admission fee, but its well worth it. The museum contains a wealth of maritime lore that you won’t find anywhere else.

While there are many New York Hotels to choose from, including The Milford – A New York Hotel, many Guests will be looking for a New York Hotel that offers value as well as exceptional amenities. The Milford is located near the Javits Convention Center and is close to New York's Times Square, many Manhattan Activities, NYC City Tours, Manhattan Events and NYC Shopping, New York City Restaurants and New York Events.

Free ship tours continue on Friday if you missed checking out any of your favorite vessels and a number of demonstrations and shows will be going on throughout the city. The Marine Corps will have activities at Battery Park all day and the Coast Guard will be doing search and rescue demonstrations at Staten Island Pier. There are USMC Aviation events at Forrest Hills High School in Queens, East Islip High School out on Long Island, and Orchard Beach in the Bronx. There are also US Navy Aviation Events scheduled in New Jersey at Hackensack High School and Paramus Middle School.

All of that is just the warm up for the big events over the weekend. Be sure not to miss USMC Day in Times Square on Saturday. The Marine Corps and Navy Bands will both be performing and the turnout is expected to number several thousand, not quite New Years Eve numbers, but definitely a good time for all who attend. It ends at 2:00 PM, so you’ll still have time to catch the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps Air and Land Demonstrations at Eisenhower Park or the Staten Island Music Festival.

The rest of the weekend is filled with more of the same. Sundays highlight would have to be the Staten Island War of 1812 Commemoration Event in Ft. Wadsworth, while Monday’s must-see is most definitely the USMC Aviation Event at Clove Lake Park on Staten Island. Take in as much as you can.
