All electrical installations carried out these days have to be performed in line with British Standards 7671 - 2008. All electrical systems will, hopefully, have been carried out to the requirements for electrical installs that were active at the time of installation. In order to prove that all active electrical installations are safe frequent testing and inspection should be carried out. The United Kingdoms ‘Electricity at Work Regulations of nineteen eighty nine' which became active in the early 1990's and the previous Safety at Work act of nineteen seventy four made it a legal requirent that each business must be safe for use by their employees, it's customers and the general public. Government figures illustrate that an average of ten people are fatally injured and an estimated seven hundred and fifty others are caused serious injury by dangerous electrical installations whether in the home or work place. Defective electrical installs are the source of a very many fires, and although fatalities are thank fully an usual happening they do still happen and fire damage to buildings, industrial machinery, office equipment ...
... and also personal property can be a great inconvenience and highly disruptive to businesses. To reduce the chances of similar accidents taking place frequent checks are needed, and due to the fact that there can be years inbetween formal inspections it is a wise precaution to regularly investigate for evidence of excessive wear, breakages, missing parts, loose fitting or signs of over heating through out electrical equipment and switchgear. Such simple operations as depressing the test button on RCD (residual current devices) on from time to time can truly be a lifesaving operation. Thankfully regular checks don't need to be carried out by a qualified electrician, as long as they are familiar in the use of the system and as such able to assess any defects that might have become visible. Insurance providers are now often likely to want to know that the correct precautions are in operation for the protection and maintenance of the policy owners offices. It is now commonplace for insurers to have specific clauses refering to the electrical installation and can ask for evidence that a valid report certificate is in effect for the life of the policy. Failure to do so can be viewed as negligence on the policy holders behalf and may therefor invalidate the policy. The period between inspections varies depending on the type of installation and it's use and operation. For general industrial installations the biggest period between electrical inspections is 5 years, there are exceptions however and you'll need to check for your exact premises, some public buildings such as leisure centres and theatres have a max time of 3 years and for cinemas this can be between one and three years. Routine inspections are often a yearly event, with educational buildings subject to routine inspections each four months. Domestic installations are subject to a maximum ten year time between inspections, or of course on change of ownership. Specialist installs can vary enormously in their maximum period between inspection, some where between 3 months and 6 years, there are far too many types of special installs to list here.
