When your baby is born, your life is turned completely upside down. It can be difficult to find time for anything, let alone thinking about what to wear. But clothes are important. Taking a little time to think about your clothes and jewellery can make you feel more human again, and save you time and effort in the long run.

There are a few basic things to look for in new clothes after you have given birth; they need to be stretchy, comfortable and washable. Jersey is a good choice as it has a soft feel and is easily thrown in the wash. Patterned fabrics hide marks left from dribble or milk. You might also want to go for something that won’t need a lot of ironing. Linen is probably a bad idea.

While you probably want to burn all your maternity clothes and never wear them again, a lot of the things you wore half way through pregnancy might be about the right size for your changing shape. The most important consideration now, however, is the clothes that will be practical for breastfeeding. There are a wide range of plus size nursing tops and dresses available, with designs that have flaps or detachable straps for ...
... easy access. Breastfeeding is incredibly important for the health of your baby, so anything that helps make it easier, while allowing you to show off less of your body, is a plus.

There is no reason to think that nursing wear can’t be stylish, either. Wrap dresses and tops are both flattering and feminine, and empire line pieces suit virtually any figure. If you want to get back into trousers, high waistbands can help. Vests, cropped tees and tunics create great layering opportunities, and don’t forget jewellery. While dangly necklaces and earrings can be grabbed by little fingers, there is no reason you can’t wear pretty studs and a watch. The latter is an especially good idea as you won’t be able to get to your phone easily with a baby in your arms. When they’re a bit older, you can get a chunky necklace to make your outfit more on trend.

Finally, invest in some comfy, slip-on shoes. You’ll be on your feet a lot and with your hands full you won’t want to tie laces. Ballet pumps and espadrilles are a good choice for summer, although something that is almost a trainer will probably be the best in terms of comfort.

A Beautiful Mummy are multi-award-winning specialists in maternity and nursing wear. A lot of their products are designed to do both so you need fewer changes of wardrobe, and they have a huge range of dresses, tops, trousers and accessories.
