Ahmedabad is the largest city and capital of the state of Gujarat. Ahmedabad is the sixth largest city and seventh largest metropolitan area of India. Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, 32 km from the state capital Gandhinagar. The city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district and was the capital of Gujarat till 1960. Ahmedabad was founded on 26 February 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah to serve as the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate, and was named after him.

The structural design of the Rani Rupmati mosque of Ahmedabad represents a blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture and this is what makes it stand out above all others. Due to the natural calamity that affected the Ahmedabad city in the year 1818, the mosque lost one of its minarets.
