The Story Of Sari And Brahmin Matrimony

The six yards of fabric can make any woman look elegant. Such is the power of Sari. The appeal of saris is eternal. A sari can be easily conceptualized on any woman. Women wear saris as an everyday wear. Saris are also preferred bridal attire in many states of India. Girls getting married according to Brahmin matrimony customs wear saris during their many matrimonial rituals.
The wearing of saris dates back to 3000 B.C. it is mentioned in ancient Hindu tests and scriptures. In the old Hindu paintings, women are wearing saris, though draping style is different. The famous epic, Mahabharata has an important event where this never-ending sari changes the course of events that follows. The sari is shown here as a symbol of virtue over evil minds.
The word sari is derived from the Sanskrit word, ‘sati’ that means a strip of cloth. Other names of sari are seere, saree, sadi et al. The Hindu scriptures from the period of Mathura, Gandharva and Gupta schools (from 1st-6th Century A.D.) have women seen wearing sari in ancient form. The ancient texts also shows that women wearing this single piece of fabric as a skirt and a veil.
In the current times, the sari is the perfect attire the brides don on the wedding day. From simple cotton saris to rich intricate silk brocade work, all types of saris are worn in a Brahmin matrimony functions. The Brahmin community believes in simple wedding functions and stresses in the sanctity of rituals.
Women can be seen wearing variety of saris in matrimonial functions. Even the matrimony sites, many prospective sites give their photographs for profiles wearing a sari. A sari truly represents the women of India and brings out grace and beauty. Saris are available in wide palette of colors, designs and textures. The weaves and textures differentiate saris from one state to another. Most of the brides of Hindi matrimony are seen wearing rich brocade work Benarasi saris. Brides for wedding attire commonly prefer these saris. The work and designs on Benares saris have strong Mughal influences. The intertwining florals and motifs are commonly seen in paintings and work of art from Mughal era.
