The Atkins Diet
In terms of name brand recognition, the Atkins Diet has to be the best known diet currently in existence. While the diet has been lying low in recent years due to a number of different reasons, there is no doubt that the Atkins diet is still one of the best known diets around. This has been established not only by figures regarding the sales of books and magazines around the world, but it is also established by the fact that many of the polls that have been taken in this area have once again pointed to Atkins as being the diet of choice.
The Atkins diet was developed by a man named Dr. Robert Atkins and it was originally developed in the 1960s. The 1960s was a decade of much political change and one of the things that became popular in the 1960s was the concept of the attractive thin body. It was at that point that thin bodies became the attractive norm in society where previously athletic or full-figured bodies had been dominant and it was largely diets like the Atkins diet that created those thin forms.
The Atkins diet functions through the use of carbohydrate restriction. The carbohydrates are restricted through ...
... the eating of certain foods over others and eventually the end result is that carbohydrate levels within the body fall. The end result, according to the Atkins diet, is a thinner form that can be maintained easily if the diet is adhered to. This is the diet that Dr. Atkins advocated and even after the man's death in 2003 this is what his company continues to advocate. According to the Atkins approach, restricting carbohydrates in the diet will bring about the desired results vis-a-vis weight loss.
One of the reasons that Atkins is still a popular diet is the residual effect from the "low carb revolution" that the diet has been given credit for. According to a study done at the time, when the Atkins diet was at its peak of popularity in 2003 and 2004, almost 10% of the adults in North America were on the diet. That number had declined to 2% around 2005, which was also the time when the Atkins Nutritional Company put in their application for bankruptcy.
The big question that many will ask is whether the diet actually worked. Well, while anecdotal stories perhaps provide the best evidence, a study that was done recently has confirmed that up to the first year, Atkins was above average in the results that it got for people. So, if you are looking for a diet that will be effective quickly and in the short term, Atkins is definitely one you should consider.
