Casino In Aladdin Hotel Las Vegas
I was only nineteen and shouldn't have legally played in the casino. But no one asked for his I.D., and no one even scrutinized him closely. Along on the junket was a friend of the family's from Tulsa named Bill. The first thing you should do is go to the cage, ask for the manager and establish some credit. Bill spoke this piece of advice as if it were an edict.
I don't need credit, Bobby protested. I brought five grand with me.
But Bill persisted. It was a good idea, he explained, to establish a line of credit. You never know when you're going to need it in the future, he argued. So, anxious to get into the serious business of gambling, Bobby walked with his friend through the busy casino to the cashier's window. With Bill's help, he quickly established $500 worth of credit.
Then Bill arranged for Bobby's complimentary room, a full refund on his airline ticket. Great! Thought bobby. They treat you right in Vegas. He tipped the bellman a dollar for carrying to his room. Then, alone, he unlocked the lone f luggage and took out the Kleenex box stuffed, 000 worth of hundreds ...
... and twenties. He jammed about half of it into his pockets, not very neatly, and went briskly into the bathroom where he splashed water on his face. He was suddenly very eager and alert. Within a few minutes walk of this room was the dizzy, dazzling excitement of a major casino. People were down there winning and losing fortunes, he reminded himself. He strode briskly from the room, anxious to try his luck.
Initiation
Several of his poker buddies were down in the online casino gambling. Craps, blackjack, roulette. Bobby, stifling an urge to barge right in, watched for a while.
He started shooting dice. It was a bad run. Occasionally, one of his pals from O.S.U. would come by and give a sympathetic pat on the shoulders. But it just got worse. You couldn't tell night from day in the casino. Once Bobby walked out for fresh air, surprised to find the sky black above the commercial glitter of the strip, even more surprised to find it had been dark out for three hours.
He returned to the craps game with renewed determination. But when the odds are fixed in favor of the house, determination won't do it. Courage won't make you win. Stubbornness doesn't help much. And you can't intimidate the house, no matter what. He lost, then lost some more, and by midnight he'd returned to his room twice for more money. By two a.m., despite a short-lived recovery during which he'd cut his losses to less than a grand, he had managed to burn up the entire $5,000.
When the final dice roll ate up Bobby's remaining fifty-five dollars, Bill said, Let's go to bed. You can try again tomorrow. Bobby declined, knowing that sleep would be impossible in the face of this savage tragedy. He got his $500 credit, courtesy of the Aladdin and shot some more. Bill hung around to watch the finish.
When Bobby was down to three green chips, worth $75, Bill again urged his younger friend to give up for the night. Bill thought he had some obligation to keep Bobby from going to bed completely broke. After all, Baldwin was the youngest member of the junket. He was the only one not legally old enough to enter the casino. It seemed reasonable that he needed some sympathetic protection and supervision.
Well, hell, Bobby responded, I might as well burn up this last seventy-five bucks. I'm broke anyway.
So Bill said, All right. I'm going upstairs. See you tomorrow.
Miracle
On the next roll, Bobby thought the hell with it. He bet the whole $75 and won. Then he tested his luck with a $100 wager. That won. Next $150, and that won. A great excitement began to stir within him. When it was his turn to roll, he bet still bigger and threw the dice forcefully...
At 6:30 in the morning, he picked up the courtesy phone near the crap table. The phone in Bill's room rang six times before the older man answered. Yeah?
Bill, this is Bobby. Come on downstairs. I think I need you. What time is it?
I'll check... Bill, it's about six-thirty.
Bill hung up. Bobby rang his room again. Again Bill murmured sleepy, incoherent words and hung up. There were two security guards near the table. Bobby took two $25 green chips off his stacks and handed one to each guard. He scribbled Bill's name and room number on a piece of paper and handed it to the nearest one. Could you please get this man out of bed and bring him down here?
When Bill got downstairs ten minutes later, he looked at Bobby, then at the chips, and said, I don't believe this!
And Bobby said, Well, neither do I, Bill. But they don't have any five-hundred dollar chips, so these are all hundreds. Can you help me cash in?
Bill was terrifically excited. Well, how did this happen?
I just took those three green chips and kept driving them. I guess I was lucky.
Kid, if you only knew...
