Kitchen Design Over The Years
The location of the kitchen within the home has progressively changed over the years, as interior design and home layouts have changed. Going back a century or two, you would often find the kitchen in the basement home. While many of us never had to live with a kitchen that was in the basement, most people can relate to older homes that had the kitchen tucked in the far back of the home. It was often an isolated room that was closed off from the rest of the living space, and would typically be completely separated from the eating or dining area.
As the family life style started changing, the dining area and kitchen area were beginning to combine. The kitchen itself was much larger, and would usually accomodate the kitchen table as well. The dining rooms of the past were now considered formal dining rooms, which were only used on special occassions. Most people can relate to that room in the house that was only used when company was coming over.
With today's lifestyle, the kitchen has become the hub of the home. From bill paying, to homework station, to the entertainment room, the kitchen is now being ...
... designed to able to be a multi-purpose room. Most kitchens today are left open into the family room so that mom can keep an eye on the kids while working, or so that the cook can socialize with guests while preparing food. Most kitchens are also being designed with a desk or work station in the layout to accomodate our busy lifestyles.
Most people don't pay a lot of attention to how kitchens have evolved, but it is important to take a look at the past to get a feel for where design is going in the future. As we all know, history always repeats itself, and we are starting to see a revival of the antique or nostalgic look from interior designers. Keep that in mind with your next project.
