Hebrew Lessons Online – Keeping It Simple?

There are a lot of websites on the internet that offer Hebrew lessons online, either in total or in part. How do beginners choose which online course will work best for them?
The answer, at least partly has to do with how sophisticated the lessons have to be to reach the goals of the student.
For example, if the beginning student is learning Hebrew to fulfill some academic exercise, then the learning requirements will be different than if the goal is to communicate in Hebrew with other Hebrew-speaking people. And this last goal will depend on the level of communication desired. A tourist traveling to Israel won’t need to know as much as someone planning to immigrate to Israel will.
Most people who would like to learn by getting Hebrew lessons online would probably like to learn as much as possible as easily as possible.
Hebrew is an ancient, biblically historic language that dates back thousands of years. Even though many Hebrew course descriptions will trumpet about how simple learning Hebrew is, the fact is that for many of us learning that language doesn’t seem all that simple.
First ...
... of all, Hebrew has its own alphabet that cannot be easily explained in English. This alphabet is known as the Alephbet and it consists only of consonants, which, by themselves, are useless without vowels “stuck” onto them.
Also, Hebrew is written and read right to left instead of left to right the way English is. It is a totally different way of thinking.
Simple? Right.
In truth, it might be, but “simple” is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. What seems simple to one person may seem incomprehensible to another.
Some of these “simple” learning approaches center around a concept called “Heblish.” This approach dispenses with the Alephbet altogether and relies on combining Hebrew and English to learn Hebrew. In other words, both Hebrew and English can be seen or heard in the same phrase or sentence.
But not every Jewish person is enamored with this approach, decrying in no uncertain terms the bastardization of an ancient and otherwise beautiful language.
Another approach used in learning Hebrew lessons online involves the use of pictures in learning the Alephbet, while still others teach by exposing the learner to practical applications such as reading newspapers written in Hebrew. Students can start by reading easy publications, and gradually move up to more advanced ones.
