Learning Hebrew Online For Free

Hebrew is an ancient and historic language dating back to biblical (Torah and Old Testament) times. There are several ways to learn it. Learning Hebrew online is one of them. And as it turns out, the rudiments of the language can be learned for free.
How a prospective student of the Hebrew language chooses an online course relates to the level of sophistication needed. Free lessons will only go so far, but that may be all that’s needed in the beginning.
So, free is good – but what are the options?
There’s a lot of information on the internet, and lots of choices, but there are 4 basic ways that seem to be the most popular as far as learning Hebrew online is concerned.
One way is to use “Virtual Ulpan.” This website does not make noises about becoming fluent in a short period of time. It is not an all-encompassing and complete course, but certain assumptions are made regarding its target audience. It assumes that most of the people using their site are American Jews who already have a certain amount of fluency in reading Hebrew. It’s just that these people may not have a complete understanding ...
... of what they are reading.
Ulpan helps the student by breaking the process up into logical processes, from how to read words, to understanding the Hebrew alphabet, to speaking and understanding and up to reading full articles.
A second popular course is “Milingua.” Through a series of free lessons that contain explanations with exercises, Milingua’s approach to learning Hebrew online is through practical grammar exercises and a dictionary of over 5,000 words. The exercises are both written and verbal. Registration is required, though one can try it out with the first 4 lessons before registering.
Another freebie out there is a “trial” opportunity that uses live Hebrew teachers. This is done via small, interactive groups of up to 8 students. There are 5 live lesson groupings to choose from. After the trial period a decision will need to be made on whether or not to continue for a fee.
Then there’s “Foundation Stone,” which offers free downloads of Hebrew tutorials. These materials can be browsed online, but the main course is through an online system of study that adapts to the individual needs of the student. It focuses on individual words (verbal and written) from English to Hebrew and from Hebrew to English. Set goals and view your own statistics.
There are more options for learning Hebrew online than this, of course. But the point is that these options exist – for free.
