While you should schedule eye exams regularly to have an eye doctor check for conditions that have no discernible symptoms, there are also certain danger signs that indicate you need to visit an eye center as soon as possible. A comprehensive eye vision examination will allow your eye doctor to identify the exact problem and recommend a treatment plan for you.

Generally speaking, any sort of blurriness of vision is a cause for concern. The onset of blurriness can either be gradual or sudden. Gradual blurriness, while an indicator that you should pay your optometrist a visit, is not usually a cause for worry. Most of the time, this is simply the onset of short- or long-sightedness, and you might notice yourself moving books and magazines closer to or further from your face than usual, as you subconsciously attempt to compensate for the deterioration in your vision. If the onset of blurriness is sudden, however, this is usually indicative of a more serious problem, such as retinal detachment.

Headaches are another good indicator of a potential eye problem. Changes in your vision will often result in headaches, as ...
... anyone who has had to endure a wrong prescription for eyeglasses will attest to. If your vision has suddenly deteriorated, as your body attempts to cope, you will often experience a headache that can be anywhere from mild to debilitating. If you experience recurring headaches, then you should consider getting your eyes checked.

Any sort of pain in your eyes is a definite cause for concern. While pain in the eyes can be caused by everyday things such as lack of sleep or placing too much strain on the eyes when looking at a computer screen or reading, it can also indicate a much more serious problem. An abnormal growth in the eyes, for example, will cause pain in the eyes that grows to be very severe. Eye infections often cause eye pain as a symptom before causing the eyes to become red and itchy.

Of all the possible conditions that might affect your eyes, eye infections are probable the most common. Eye infections are caused by bacteria getting into your eyes, and the easily recognizable symptoms of red, itchy, tearing and swollen eyes are caused by the body’s attempts to fight off the infection. While eye infections are not life-threatening, serious infections can cause permanent deterioration in eyesight or even blindness, so it is not something to be taken lightly and is definitely cause for a trip to the eye doctor.

Finally, if you have not had a full eye examination in the past 2 years, then it is definitely time to go for one. As you get older, you should reduce the period between eye vision checkups from 2 years to 1 year, because you become more susceptible to eye problems as you age. While an annual checkup might seem like overkill, just imagine how much damage an eye disease could cause to your eyes if it were to go undetected and untreated for close to 2 years!
