Alleppey - Accommodation In The Land Of Back Waters

Alleppey or Alappuzha, a pristine location in the South Indian state of Kerala, is known for its serene back waters and lush green landscapes. Popularly called the Venice of the East, Alleppey is replete with canals and lagoons. It is also the hub of back water tourism in the country.

An ancient city, the origin of Alleppey can be dated back to the 16th century. When the then Dewan of Travancore, Raja Kesavadas founded Alleppey in 1762, there was only one canal on the strip of sand between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake. As the town flourished into a bustling commercial centre, many traders set up their shops in Alleppey. A waterway was developed in Alleppey soon and after more land was available due to the receding sea, Alleppey grew into a major trade centre and port. Very shortly, Alleppey developed into a major port along the Malabar Coast. Traders came to Alleppey from all over the world to trade in commodities like spices and other souvenirs.
