Freelancing As A Better Career Choice!
Some people are temperamentally permanent workers and others are temperamentally IT Freelancers. Permies, as we shall call
them, would like to have the money that freelancers make but they also want the job security, the pension, the sick pay, the
holidays and the other benefits that being an employee brings.
They don’t want to suddenly find themselves unable to pay the mortgage or the car loan – or indeed have no income coming in
if they decide to take a holiday. Also, they may want to stay as a permie as a career choice. They may believe that they are
good enough to climb the tree and to get to the top in their profession and company.
They may see themselves going on to be a Project Manager and Department Manager and maybe go even higher. They like the
status that this brings and wouldn’t like to be in their forties and be reporting in to a Project Manager in his or her late
twenties even if he or she, as a freelancer, is earning more money than the Project Manager. They reason that in due course
they may well be earning more money at the company than ...
... a freelancer might do if they go on to senior management and get
share options and fancy company cars etc.
For those who choose IT Freelancing as a career all this is anathema to them. To
wait for years for preferment, working as hard and as diligently as you can for years, hoping each time a position comes up
that you will get it – and then maybe being disappointed when it is offered to someone else maybe from outside the company.
Many people are temperamentally freelancers. They don’t want to wait years for the big money to come – if it ever does. They
are willing to sacrifice job security for money now. Their ambition may lie outside IT and they want to pile as much money
up in as short a time as possible so that they can get out altogether and do something else. They may just want to have the
trappings of more wealth now rather than when they see themselves as too old to enjoy it. They may want that fancy big house
now and the flash car and the exotic holidays, and if it is a guy, the fancy girlfriend that he can afford.
Even when out of work, he or she is not jealous of the permie. He or she likes to make large sums of money – even if it
doesn’t come every week of the year like it would with a permie, whereas a permie would be horrified by the prospect of
being out of work and not being able to pay the bills. Everyone to their own. So, which category do you fit into?
