Legacy Of The Sindhi Rituals

Sindhi people were originally the Sindhi language speaking native people of the province of Sindh, which is currently a part of the country of Pakistan. Though the Sindhi’s are mostly Hindus, there is an influence of Sufism on the Sindhi culture. Sindhi rituals are based upon instructions of the Veda’s. It is similar to other Hindu marriages, but is observed more lavishly and minutely.
A Sindhi wedding comprises of the three parts- pre marriage rituals, marriage rituals and post marriage rituals.
Pre Marriage Rituals:
‘Kachci Mishri’,
The first ritual related to the marriage. Coconut and mishri is given to both bride and groom, signifying their union.
‘Pakki mishri’
This is the formal engagement ceremony. Here the couple exchanges rings in front of a priest. Then a ‘Berana Satsang’ ceremony is conducted. This is dedicated to the Sindhi God Jhulelal to ask for his blessings.
‘Santh’
In this ceremony, seven married woman apply oil to the bride’s hair and then she is asked to break an earthen lamp or pot with her right foot in one attempt.

In this Sindhi ritual, the bride’s hand is decorated with henna designs.
‘Ghari puja’
It is an important ritual, which takes place simultaneously at both the bride and groom’s house. Some other small rituals are ‘saagri’, ‘tih’, ‘lada’, and ‘sangeet’.
There are many Sindhi rituals on the marriage day.
‘Haldi ’
Oil and haldi (turmeric) are applied to both the bride and the groom’s body as a form of purification. Then a red thread is tied to their hands. After this, they cannot go out of their house until the marriage. This is known as – ‘Garo Dhago’.
Swagatam
The groom along with his family and relatives arrive at the bride’s house. They are welcomed through this ritual.
Paon dhulai’
The couple’s feet are washed in this ritual. After this, the main wedding ceremony commences. The couple’s right hands are tied with a sacred thread and they circle the fire four times. The circling is known as phera.
‘kanyadaan’
In this ritual, the bride’s parents handover their daughter to the groom and groom’s family.
Vidai’
This is the First of the post-marriage Sindhi rituals. The newly wed couple is entrusted to the groom’s family and they start for the groom’s house.
‘Datar’
Upon their arrival, her in-laws wash the bride’s feet. Then the bride sprinkles milk all around the house, following which the bride passes handful of salt to her husband, who in turn returns it her hand without spilling.
‘Sataurah’
This ritual is considered to be the last ritual, where the newly wed goes to visit the bride’s house at a time fixed by the priest of the Sindhi rituals.
