Energy costs are on the rise. Here is no question that the once fairly inexpensive household energy supplies have become a significant factor in one's household budget. In 2010 the average US household paid $1420 for electricity and this was the 5th year that prices had increased above the inflation rate

Just why is it becoming so expensive? Well there are a few reasons; firstly the average US home is consuming considerable more power than it used to in the '90s. The roll out of computers, smart phones, cheaper flat screen TVs and of course a myriad of home appliances and gadgets have significantly increased the monthly kilowatt usage. This has been partly offset by the greater efficiency of modern appliances. For example a modern refrigerator will consume half the power of a 1990 model. Air-conditioners use less power as well. Nevertheless there is a lot more power being supplied to the domestic sector than 10 years ago.

Secondly the cost of creating electrical power has shot up. The international price of oil has increased over the last few years and shows no likelihood of coming down any time soon. Old power ...
... stations are having to be replaced. As we all know the clean air act has made many of the old coal fired stations as major pollutants even if they were relatively cheap to operate.

In addition the replacement or alternative technologies like wind and solar power require a higher base price to make them viable. The wind pylons would be great if they could be relied on for more than 70% of the time, sadly the actual delivery is more like 25% of design capacity. For it to be worth the developers while he has to receive a subsidy which is added on to the cost of delivery to the household. In addition, because wind power is not reliable one still needs the base (fossil fuel powered or nuclear powered) power stations on hand to make up any shortfall there may be in demand.

Solar power too is a developing technology and a thing of the future. But the same limitations apply. The sun doesn't always shine and clouds can get in the way during daytime hours.

So how can a household reduce its costs, Direct Energy has a number of solutions and suggestions.

One of the most effective ways of knowing the energy costs is buying your energy before you use it. Using this arrangement you get a somewhat better rate than is available on a monthly billed system. You no longer require to place a deposit or spend time checking your bills. Direct Energy can inform you on a daily basis of your usage and you will always be in good time to purchase a new allocation before you run out of credit.

This will make you a lot more conscious of your energy usage and thus turning off lights and planning the timing of your electric boiler heating the water can greatly reduce your bills.

Check out Direct Energy for these and other tips.
